Strawbale Home: Eco Home Winner

Discover the transformation: a neglected dwelling in Somerset replaced by a strawbale home, self-built on a largely DIY basis. Winner of the Eco Home Award in the 2011 Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Award. O2i Design assisted the owners in their aim, to craft a virtually self-sufficient home.

The owner Anthony shared, “We found an old stone cottage on Plotfinder.net. The view was breathtaking, making it ideal. Engaging Duncan Pyle from O2i Design Ltd confirmed we were on the right track.”  The house stands as a remarkable achievement and testament to the owners’ vision. Green features include:

• Lime-rendered timber frame and straw bale walls
• Passive solar heating, roof-mounted solar panels
• Log burning stove, heat recovery ventilation system
• Rainwater harvesting, composting toilets
