Straw Bale House

Wedmore, Somerset

Set in stunning countryside, this new 2 storey home is a straw bale, timber framed self build.

After lengthy negotiations, O2i Design Ltd gained Planning Approval for the owners to create a house for life which was as self sustaining as possible.

This wonderful two-storey strawbale, self-build house, was amongst the Finalists of the Homebuilding and Renovating Awards 2011 (self build category), and declared the Eco Home Winner in the competition (voted for by readers).

Daisy Farm is a remarkable achievement by the owners and a real testament of the owners' drive and vision.

Using the stone of the house they replaced and incorporating many sustainable design features, the owners of this project have achieved a home that perfectly represents their interest in low-impact living. Prior to completion, the house was already featured in the “Mendip Open Green” event as an example of green architecture.  The house has been designed with many green features including:

  • The timber frame was built by local craftsmen using Douglas Fir
  • Straw bale walls are rendered with lime
  • 200 mm of Ecotherm rigid insulation was used under the floor and 250mm of Warmcell used in the roof
  • Pantiles from the previous house that stood on the site were reused
  • Passive solar heating and roof mounted solar panels are augmented by a log burning stove for the colder winter months
  • The ventilation system uses heat recovery to retain energy inside the house
  • For water conservation rainwater harvesting and composting toilets are installed
